launches Saturday 31st July – Curated by Jo Anne Butler, Tara Kennedy, Rosie Lynch

Away from the bustling cities are the small towns that planners, architects and politicians often forget. These small towns are neither the hubs of the global financial industry nor are they the high-tech centres of their countries. They are towns where ordinary residents experience the vagaries of the global economy and the impacts of global climate changes. But they are also towns from which we can learn how to develop a sustainable future….
‘Small town sustainability’, Heike Mayer and Paul L. Knox, Birkhauser (2009)

COMMONAGE invites artists and architects to undertake a radical exploration of the built environment of Callan, a town that is unique yet familiar and whose stage has become a fertile ground for contemplation and research. Comprising both newly commissioned work (Rhona Byrne, Gerry Cahill, Lisa Cassidy, Culturstruction, The Good Hatchery, HURL, Henrietta Williams) and existing work (Gabriella Kiss, Dominic Lavelle, Katie Mangan, School of Architecture U.C.D.) this architectural exploration is not so much about buildings but about the spaces we share. COMMONAGE engages with the energies, histories and present day situations of the overlooked core of the town, some of it actively threatened by decay and commercial unsustainability.

Looking at ‘community’ becomes particularly pertinent in the context of Callan town, with it’s Augustinian history and life-sharing communities as well as one of the last independent agricultural co-operatives active in South Leinster. COMMONAGE highlights this context by working with areas of the town which are civic or collectively owned and operated. These places include the former home of the Callan Co-op, the Augustinian lands and the riverbank. This research work marks the start of a much longer engagement with the built environment of Callan. The programme presents a complex and diverse set of practices, intended to encourage possibility and to provide a resource for future development to be measured in qualitative rather than quantitative terms. Often the smallest of gestures endure. In curating this programme we were struck by our encounters with a town rich with history, much of it overlooked, yet a place actively looking to the future with a sense of ambition and self- determination.

Jo Anne Butler, Tara Kennedy, Rosie Lynch

Following the success of Hotel Darklight 2009 and Dublin: The Movie 2008, both of which were made for zero budget, Darklight Film Festival are creating a new challenge. On board this year are Sony Ericsson, who are providing Darklight with a budget of €3000 for 3 lucky filmmakers!

“Darklight are delighted to announce the details of this years movie making challenge, Sony Ericsson’s ‘Free Your Film’. Following on from the successes of Darklight’s previous film making challenges, ‘Dublin: The Movie’ and ‘Hotel Darklight’, we’re sure this year’s will be the best yet.

Sony Ericsson are collaborating with Darklight to find 3 aspiring filmmakers. We’re offering a budget of €3000 to make your short film, which will then be premiered on the opening night of the Darklight Film Festival. The films will also be given additional exposure by Darklight and Sony Ericsson.

As many of you know, it’s not easy making a film, but help will be on hand. Darklight will provide invaluable support from their expert guest producer, Katie Holly from Blinder Films. Amongst other projects, she has produced The Savage Eye, 100 Mornings and Sensations.

Sony Ericsson will provide an HD video camera, which you get to keep. The HD video camera comes in the form of the new Sony Ericsson Vivaz, the world’s smallest HD video camera phone. It’s a great piece of technology that has many advantages over other HD cameras. And, when you see what it’s capable of, we think you’ll agree it’s the first filmmaker’s phone.

All that’s left to do is get your thinking caps on, then get those ideas to us. In the meantime, here’s some inspiration from our previous filmmaking challenges to get your cogs moving.”

Here’s a link to all the info on the comp: www.darklight.ie/freeyourfilm

Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery are delighted to present ‘we see them as we are’ new work by Marianne Keating.

Beetles and Flies! Limerick Printmakers will be crawling with them at 8pm on Thursday the 22nd of July! Cork based artist Marianne Keating will be covering our Robert Street gallery with her new beetle-y works for her solo show.

Keating has created a large cube within the gallery using mixed media which combines a range of techniques including: drawing, screen printing and etching to create pieces that surround the viewer. As the pieces grow and spread from floor to wall and ceiling, off the canvas and directly into the surrounding physical space they blur the line between print and the space it occupies.

Keating looks at people’s perceptions of reality and through the use of symbolism she aims to convey and challenge those perceptions.

‘The symbol of the fly has been used since early times as a recurring representation of evil, plague, and pestilence. The Greek God Myiagros, is the God of Flies and Fly–Swatting. Even the bible uses the symbolism of the Fly: Exodus 8:24 And the LORD did so; and there came grievous swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses: and in all the land of Egypt the land was corrupted by reason of the swarms of flies.

We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are. Anais Nin

Keating has developed this body of work in conjunction with the Institute for Print Research, UWE, Bristol with highly regarded researchers Elizabeth Tunell and Tom Sowden. The focus of the work was an investigation into the use of innovative and experimental enameling techniques for the production of a large-scale laser cut enameled exterior installation, which will crawl over the exterior façade of Limerick Printmakers. The scale of the work ranges from 142cm x 113cm to 35cm x 28cm.

Keating has exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally. She had completed residencies in Germany, Cork and New York. She has won several awards including a Culture Ireland award in 2010, which has helped to make this show possible.

The exhibition will run until 12th of August. For further information on this exhibition, please contact Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery at the details below. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm.

Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery Ltd. acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council.

The arts will be in the firing line again in the autumn in the run-up to the Budget.

Once again we need to make sure that our voices are heard and that the message is clearly articulated that artists and the arts need to be supported. Last year, local arts workers groups and the National Campaign for the Arts made a big difference to the outcome of the Budget. Despite this, in 2010 many artist were affected by the cuts – we need to mobilise again.

GROUP MEETING SAT 17th JULY

There will be a Dublin South Central Arts Workers Group Meeting on Saturday 17th July (9 days from now) at 12pm (noon) in Mill Street Studios, Dublin 8 (near Blackpitts). See map below.

It is hoped that the meeting will last about an hour.

WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

Dublin South Central is one of the strongest Arts Workers Groups in the country.

The strength of the group lies in our numbers. There are 466 members at present (367 on Facebook and 99 on the gmail contact list.)

Whenever we have met with TDs and Councillors they have been impressed by the fact that we are a LARGE, ACTIVE and INFORMED group.

There was a great turnout at the meeting last August. A detailed plan of action was agreed at that meeting and a lot has been achieved since then. Our 5 TDs and our Councillors are now well aware who the Dublin South Central Arts Workers Group is.

This is our chance to meet up again and make a fresh plan.

Included in the plan will be how our Group can take part in the National Campaign for the Arts NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION (17th September).

AGENDA

1) A very brief history of the Dublin South Central Arts Workers Group and what it has achieved so far

2) Outline of position in relation to possible future cuts to Arts Funding

3) What do WE THE MEMBERS want the Dublin South Central Arts Workers Group to be / to do

4) National Campaign for the Arts – National Day of Action (17th September)

5) Building a database of members – and ensuring members are registered to vote

6) Vote on a Plan of Action

7) AOB

If you have any queries, comments or need any additional information please do not hesitate to contact me.

Many thanks

Regards

The RDS Student Art Awards boast an annual prize fund in excess of €18,400. Encompassing the RDS Taylor Art Award, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, the RDS Student Art Awards are the most prestigious art competition open to registered students of award-bearing art courses in Ireland. The Awards also provide a platform for exhibiting works that students might not have the opportunity to do so otherwise. Many of Ireland’s most eminent artists have received prizes from the RDS Student Arts Awards. In particular, artists such as Walter Osborne and Sir William Orpen to contemporary artists such as James Hanley, R.H.A. and Eamonn O’Kane have been recipients of the prestigious RDS Taylor Arts Award.

Selected entries received from artists throughout the countries art colleges are displayed during the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show. From painting, sculpture, and printmaking to installations and film screening, there is something for all who have an interest in the visual arts.

Since 1731, the RDS proudly continues to fulfil its commitment to advancing agriculture, arts, industry and science. The 2010 Student Art Awards and Travelling Exhibition aims to promote excellence in the arts; to further the professional development of young musicians, artists and craftspeople and to support developmental projects in the arts.

The RDS Student Arts Award Exhibition will take place in the RDS Concert Hall during the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show (August 4-8) from 9.00am to 7.00pm daily (entry fee required). After the Show concludes, the Exhibition will continue until August 12 from 10.00am to 5.00pm (no entry fee) before travelling to two other venues in Ireland to allow the work of the most talented Irish arts students to be viewed by a wide audience showcasing the latest contemporary art works being created.

In its 42nd year, the RDS National Crafts Competition Exhibition is a major event in the Irish crafts calendar.
