Some of you may be aware of the Pecha Kucha Nights that have been taking place in Dublin since last year. They are organised by The Irish Architecture Foundation and The Small Print and take place every couple of months at the Sugar Club, Dublin. PechaKucha is a format of presentation/slideshow, originating from Japan, which invites creative people to present 20 slides of the content of their choice and talk about each slide for 20 seconds. So each talk is 6minutes and 40seconds – removing any chance of waffle basically! They are fun nights, so try to check one out if you can.

“PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace…” >>>> Read more at http://www.pecha-kucha.org/

Recently the Irish Architecture Foundation have uploaded video of the past Dublin PechaKucha Nights talks to their YouTube page. Here’s a selection of visual art/illustration/photography based PechaKucha Night talks to give you a taste. The AIF’s Youtube page has many more you can watch.

March 19, 2010

6:00 pm

to

8:00 pm

Oonagh Young Gallery is pleased to present acclaimed artist Daniel Canogar in his first Irish exhibition entitled “Scanner”. Constructed from television, telephone and computer cables, this installation underscores the idea of mortality in relation to technologies, which become obsolescent with increasing rapidity and reflects on our own relationship with these technologies. This elegiac installation can be viewed as a meditation on despondency and disappointment prevalent in recent times.

The artist’s interest in these materials is inspired by his “Photo Safaris” – bike excursions Canogar makes around the city with his camera. Through this process of photography, which he uses as sketches, Canogar’s attention was drawn to an emerging landscape of redundant technologies. Urban scenes form the point of departure for much of his work with an increasing interest, developed in recent years, in images of rubble from demolished buildings and the general detritus of modern life. These scenes encapsulate the artist’s interest in the excesses of mass media in today’s society. Canogar expresses his preoccupation with the tension that exists between technology and the human body through the use of light in thematic narratives. Combining found remnants of ‘new media’ with light, the artist seeks redress for the dematerialised body in this ‘society of the spectacle.’

Memory is immanent in Canogar’s work. Waste materials from our everyday lives retain memories; the electric cables preserve traces of the life they once had and voices they once transmitted. With his use of discarded materials, the artist reflects on how to deal with the past through individual and collective memory; seeking to reveal secrets, mysteries and lost stories.

Daniel Canogar lives and works in Madrid. He has been recently appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Culture as the artist representing Spain in the Atrium of the European Parliament. His public art interventions have been seen in Naples, Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Segovia and Madrid. He earned a Masters Degree specialising in photography from New York University in 1990. Since then he has exhibited his work at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Reina Sofia, Madrid, Centro de Arte de Santa Monica, Barcelona, Wexner Centre for Arts, Ohio, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein Westfallen Museum, Dusseldorf, Hamburger Banhof Museum in Berlin and Matress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh among others.

Scanner is supported by SEACEX.

Opening Friday 19th March 2010 6 – 8pm

The artist will give a talk before the opening from 5.30 pm

(An Excerpt)

onethousandandonenights.info SD&G

Saturday 7-10pm Zwaanshals 243a

13 March 2010 Rotterdam

With the support by the Piet Zwart Institute – Willem de Kooning Academy, TENT.Rotterdam & Fonds BKVB.

JOSEPH rises and ranges about the room listlessly. He picks up a photograph of RONALD that is lying on the cabinet. He stares at it.

RONALD
(without looking up, remaining focused on his book)
What do I look like?

JOSEPH
You look like a scholar.

Scrutinizing it closely

Smoldering into the camera.

RONALD
(Still not looking up)
Do I wear glasses?

JOSEPH
Indeed.

RONALD
Am I waving at you?

JOSEPH
Yes.

RONALD
Does smoldering mean smile?

JOSEPH
It means to burn slowly with no flame.

RONALD
(finally looking up)
That is not a very nice thing to say.

JOSEPH
(Hurriedly, to appease him)
No, this is a compliment, burning like the embers of the campfire…

He pauses as if summoning up the words.

the hot cherry of a rope set aflame… the coals of a sauna.

RONALD
Wow, you are making an effort to get me back in the comfort zone

He closes his book and places it on the table.

OK, I am back in front of the fireplace. Now tell me a story.

AS THE world economy continues its inexorable shift to becoming knowledge-based, we have many competitive advantages,” wrote Dermot Desmond in this newspaper last December. “The combination of our cultural pedigree and our technological leadership suggests to me that we can create a lasting opportunity for Ireland’s future generations.”

Over the past 18 months we have lived through unprecedented times: an economy on its knees, profound public disillusionment in our political leaders, and a political system – in need of repair – that has failed to deliver. The first signs of optimism emerged at the Global Irish Economic Forum at Farmleigh, where, contrary to public expectation, the likes of Denis O’Brien and Dermot Desmond championed the importance of Irish culture as a key element of our recovery.’ (More)
